How C-nery helped Terya to grow carbon projects with an objective approach

By investing in forests and through financial mechanisms like carbon and biodiversity credits they unlock the potential of nature. Tools like carbon credits can create measurable returns for investors while channeling much-needed resources into forest conservation.
Terya knows that nature is undervalued, underfunded and increasingly under threat.
“We set out to change that,” says Fernando from Terya. “We want to protect 250,000 hectares of land.”
Finding the most optimal methodologies and standards for diverse projects can be tricky. That’s why they were glad to be working with C-nery. They helped them bring an objective overview of different methodologies for their projects
Situation - Turning nature protection into an investment opportunity
Thanks to Terya, investors can support restoration projects with a return through climate impact. It does this by developing carbon projects and using carbon credits as the return on investment.
But carbon projects are far from simple. The data is scattered, the standards keep changing and the methodologies are complex. That’s why expert guidance is key.
Terya focuses on forestry, one of the most established areas in the carbon market. Even in this mature space, predicting future carbon storage can be tricky. And with climate change there is even more uncertainty to long-term outcomes.
Challenge - Expanding across borders makes things more complex.
Terya started small, but as they grew across Europe and are exploring possibilities in Latin America, managing projects became harder.
Each one came with different:
- Local laws
- Investor expectations
- Carbon (certification) standards and carbon credit types
That’s when Terya started looking into tech and AI for support. Until they started working with a company that was already built for this: C-nery.
Some of the questions Terya asked C-nery included:
- Whether there are specific methodologies that take into account that no logging has taken place in a forest in the past, and that no logging will occur in the future.
- Which methodologies have the highest environmental integrity, and which ones are approved under ICROA? (ICROA is a quality watchdog and policy advocate for the carbon offset market. Its goal is to ensure that offsetting contributes meaningfully to global climate goals, rather than being a loophole for inaction.)
- Which methodologies are approved under CORSIA? (CORSIA is a global offsetting scheme designed to cap the net carbon emissions of international aviation at 2020 levels. While it does not reduce emissions at the source, it aims to neutralize growth-related emissions through carbon offsetting, playing a role in the aviation sector’s path toward climate neutrality.)
C-nery’s solution - Structure in every step
Partnering up with C-nery gave Terya a ton of benefits.
They can find the right methodology, no matter the:
- Location: Whether it’s Spain or South America, project conditions vary. C-nery’s tailored approach adapts to each geography.
- Investor type: Different investors want different things. With C-nery’s tools, Terya can speak their investors' language.
- Project structure: C-nery gives Terya a consistent, structured way to assess project possibilities.
C-nery also shared examples of completed projects similar to Terya’s, helping them better understand how all these variables change the estimated amount of CO₂ their project could capture.
For Terya, there was one other aspect that proved invaluable: the objectivity of C-nery’s report.
This means Terya can now compare methodologies side by side in an unbiased way. This makes it easier to explain options to investors and builds trust through transparency.
Result: solving big problems with smart tools
“C-nery brings smart solutions to complex problems.” says Fernando from Terya. And that makes it possible to move forward.
After completing three projects together, Terya and C-nery have built a strong partnership. C-nery gave Terya the insights needed to take the steps to protect 5,640 hectares of forest.
Terya believes nature is still undervalued. But with the right partners, that can change.
